In 2016, Ryken and his family learned that he had a chronic form of leukemia.
He was falling asleep during the day and complaining about pain in his arms and legs. Ryken started chemotherapy immediately, though the side effects were excruciating. The treatments left him nauseated and weak.
The first 3 months, they were reminded how quickly life can change, as Ryken become thinner, more pale and weak.
In a time filled with sadness and anxiety, Ryken’s wish to go spearfishing in the Bahamas became a precious ray of light—a chance to see a new corner of the world, far from the pain of endless treatments.
