Sixteen-year-old Sam, of Boise, is very athletic which made his diagnosis of T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma a painful message to receive. His illness only kept him from his love of playing ice hockey for one season during his rigorous treatment schedule. When his volunteer wish granters asked Same what his most heartfelt wish would be he had a tough time deciding. He wanted to include his younger siblings and parents for all they had helped him through. After careful consideration, Sam decided his wish was to meet his favorite professional player, Alex Ovechkin, of the Washington Capitals.
Sam’s family spent a week in Washington, D.C., where they visited sites like the Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Of course the highlight of Sam’s wish trip was attending two Capitals’ games, meeting the owners and staff, and getting to play a scrimmage with four of his favorite players. Sam’s wish was so special that ESPN covered his wish during their 2012 My Wish series.
