20-year-old Shelby from Hill City, South Dakota is an active young lady who loves the outdoors, animals, and her family. She takes every opportunity she can to horseback ride, hike, or swim. Shelby became eligible to receive a wish due to her diagnosis with a bone marrow failure disease which is most often treated with blood transfusions and immunosuppressive therapies. She graduated from high school in May 2015, and is now attending Western Dakota Technical Institute in the pursuit of becoming a registered nurse.
Popular wish choices are “to have a shopping spree,” “to swim with dolphins” or “to meet a celebrity,” but each wish is as unique as the child who requests it. Shelby’s wish was the first of a kind for Make-A-Wish Idaho and the Trailing of the Sheep Festival! She found the Festival online with researching her potential choice by looking up her favorite things. She has always loved animals, especially sheep. Attending the Trailing of the Sheep was an obvious fit.
Shelby arrived in Boise with a reception waiting for her and her family complete with Basque dancers, banners, balloons, and Make-A-Wish volunteers cheering her on with smiling faces.
“The people there are amazing and so sweet, and I really appreciate what they did for me and my family.” - Shelby
Shelby was excited to be celebrating her wish during the Festival’s 20th Anniversary. The presentation of her wish happened throughout the Festival's many events. She loved learning about sheepherding, attended sheepdog trials, a Folklife Fair, and the Trailing of the Sheep Parade through downtown Ketchum. Shelby was also able to go fly fishing and horseback riding while enjoying beautiful Idaho.
